Thumb Sucking

Babies begin sucking their fingers while still in the womb, and it's even visible in ultrasound images. Sucking is an instinctive behavior, and babies have a strong urge to suck on their mother's breast, a pacifier, or a bottle. It provides comfort and security. Thumb sucking is typically seen for the first time around 3 months of age. During the first 6 months, sucking is a significant need. Over time, babies may begin to suck on toys, the ends of blankets, or other objects.

Many parents believe that thumb sucking is a sign of hunger, but more than 80% of babies suck their thumbs even when they are not hungry.

If you feel that your baby is sucking their thumb excessively, you can offer a pacifier instead, but make sure they are not hungry first. It is generally easier to break the pacifier habit than the thumb-sucking habit.
