When Should Babies Start Brushing Their Teeth?

Starting dental care for babies as early as possible is essential for their oral health. Baby teeth are particularly vulnerable to decay, which can affect the development of permanent teeth later on. Here's a simple guide for starting your baby's dental care:

  1. When Teeth Appear:

    • As soon as your baby's first teeth begin to appear, it's time to start cleaning their teeth. Even though baby teeth are temporary, it's crucial to establish a good oral hygiene routine early on.
  2. Wiping Baby's Teeth:

    • After each meal, and especially before bedtime, gently wipe your baby's teeth with a clean, damp piece of cheesecloth or gauze. This helps remove any plaque or food particles and prevents decay.
    • Don't forget to massage the gums gently as well, especially before teeth erupt.
  3. From Age 1 Onwards:

    • Once your baby reaches the age of 1, you can start using a baby toothbrush (with soft bristles) to clean their teeth. At this point, you can clean their teeth without toothpaste or use a tiny amount of fluoride-free toothpaste designed for babies.
    • Encouraging your baby to watch you clean your own teeth can help them understand the process, and they may start to imitate you, making it a fun activity.

Early dental care helps set a foundation for good oral health habits, preventing future dental issues for your child.
