Unfortunately, a child's tooth can sometimes be knocked out due to impacts like falling or hitting something. In such situations, parents may panic and forget how to properly preserve the tooth.
If the tooth is knocked out as a result of an accident, it is important to visit a pediatric dentist as soon as possible, after addressing any immediate health concerns such as loss of consciousness or severe bleeding.
If the tooth is a primary (milk) tooth (i.e., a baby tooth or one that has not yet been replaced):
- Do NOT attempt to replace the tooth.
- Visit a dentist immediately. In some cases, a space maintainer may be required to ensure the proper development of the permanent tooth.
If the tooth is a permanent tooth, the approach is different:
- Locate the tooth.
- Hold the tooth by the crown (the visible part), not the root.
- Rinse the tooth gently under cold water for a few minutes.
- If possible, place the tooth back in its socket.
- If re-insertion is not possible, store the tooth in milk, physiological saline (saline solution), clean cold water, or even keep it in the mouth (between the cheek and gum).
- Visit the pediatric dentist as soon as possible. The chances of the tooth remaining viable are significantly higher when the tooth is placed back in its socket promptly.
