Treatments involving wires that stick to the teeth are gradually being replaced by treatments with transparent plates, and the future of orthodontic treatment worldwide is shifting toward transparent plates.
Traditionally, there are two main types of orthodontic treatment methods:
- Mobile Devices: These are removable appliances that the patient can insert and remove themselves.
- Fixed Wires: These are wires that are bonded to the teeth by the orthodontist.
These methods can be further divided into subgroups. For example, mobile devices may be used either for treatment or as a post-treatment reinforcement.
Fixed Wires can be divided into two main categories:
- Wires attached to the back surface of the teeth (lingual braces).
- Metal and aesthetic wires attached to the front surface of the teeth.
Each person's expectations and needs vary, so it is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment method for the patient. Materials and treatment types also differ based on the individual case.
Just as the age for treatment varies, the duration of treatment also depends on the severity and type of the problem. The shortest treatment period is about 6 months, with most treatments lasting 1-2 years. Some cases may take 3-4 years, and in special circumstances?such as cleft lip and palate?the treatment period may be extended. However, the process is not painful. Minor discomfort may occur during the first week or two as the patient adapts, but otherwise, the patient can continue their normal life with some caution regarding what they eat. Regular visits to the doctor for check-ups and adjustments are necessary, typically once a month.
